Post-Meltdown Wrap Up: Enid Nite, Photo Report, and Videos.

Timony and Jessica Gao dressed as masked Enid from the movie and as Little Enid the action doll.

Props to the folks at Meltdown Comics for hosting a fun evening. They screened Ghost World in their theater while the 1st annual Enid meet-up took place, followed by a Q+A lead by Mark Frauenfelder that was broadcast live on the webernet, and finished it off with a couple hours of signing!  A great way to celebrate the release of the book. Thanks to everyone that came out!

You can find a full report along with a gallery of better photographs here. Following are 4 videos from the evening. 2 versions of the Clowes/Frauenfelder interview, a live webcast and multi-camera edited version, and 2 short Meltcast interviews with Daniel Clowes and Alvin Buenaventura.

Lastly, The monograph is now sold out (see previous post) but Meltdown has a handful of autographed copies available here.

Inside Tip: "The Art of Daniel Clowes: Modern Cartoonist" Sold Out

We just heard from the publisher that the 1st printing of The Art of Daniel Clowes: Modern Cartoonist is officially sold out. I saw some copies over the weekend still lingering in my local book stores and I believe there's still some currently remaining on Amazon and other online booksellers, but there aren't many. So if you haven't picked up a copy yet and want one, now is your chance... Also, I saw that there are some autographed copies available here from Meltdown Comics.

OMCA Clowes Exhibition Preview pt. 2

More photos from the press preview at OMCA yesterday. The display walls are relief cut by a computer-driven router using drawings that Clowes made for the exhibition (seen here.) They remind me of gigantic hand-cut woodblocks for printmaking -- I guess digital technology has its moments... The custom fixtures house sliding and pivoting walls that display the work (allowing viewers to flip through it as they would a comic) and a gigantic cushioned seat to take a load off during your visit. Wow... Kudos to exhibition curator Susan Miller, exhibtion designer Nicholas de Monchaux, René de Guzman and everyone at OMCA.

Opens tomorrow!

Clowes Exhibtion at OMCA Under Construction

Curators, directors, designers, lighting specialists, conservators, framers, furniture builders, and many other highly skilled folks are all hard at work this week at the OMCA to bring together the Clowes exhibition that opens on April 14th. We got to take a tour and witness all that's involved in building a world class installation. Looking forward to the show!

Lots happening behind this door.

The scissor lift skillfully maneuvered around the gallery.

Last minute decisions...

oh and the art...

Video of interview at Kadist, San Francisco 3/28/12

Clowes interviewed at Kadist, San Francisco 3/28/12:

1 day until the release of “The Art of Daniel Clowes: Modern Cartoonist”! (…plus your chance to win an autographed copy today)

Well actually… I miscalculated when the countdown began and despite the title of this post, there are 0 days left. The official release date for The Art of Daniel Clowes: Modern Cartoonist is actually today. So go buy the book already! Or enter today’s contest for your last opportunity to win an autographed copy (details below.)

Our countdown ends with a bang: a 4-part mega-post of very random, but quality Clowes odds & ends that couldn’t be included in the book. We finish up with a Clowes/bOING bOING blast from the past.

Odds & Ends Depot
  • 1. Inspired by Clowes:
A gigantic Little Enid head (go Presspop!)
Mal Rosen (a Clowes character from “Caricature) drawn by the esteemed cartoonist Charles Burns.
Some fan-created Tina dolls (!?)

Terry Zwigoff and Clowes talk about Ghost World the movie.

An  animated trailer for David Boring by John Kuramoto.

An Apple commercial featuring Clowes directed by Errol Morris.

  • 3. OK soda:

A couple of unusual promotional items for OK Soda.
Ken Parille: “In 1994 Coca-Cola test marketed a drink with the intentionally bland name of OK Soda. Coke enlisted indie cartoonists like Clowes and Charles Burns to create art for their ironically named “beverage” (the quote marks are Coke’s).”

  •  4. And for our finale:
Back in 1991 when boingboing.net was bOING bOING the zine, Mark Frauenfelder interviewed Clowes:

Mark Frauenfelder: “My wife Carla introduced me to the work of Daniel Clowes in 1986 when she brought home the first issue of his comic book, Lloyd Llewellyn, after stopping off at the comic book store to buy the latest issue of Love & Rockets. We both became instant fans of Clowes’s misanthropic sense of humor. Daniel hated everybody and everything, but his insights were profound and his sense of humor was dark and biting. The few times I’ve met Clowes, I’ve found him to be polite and approachable, quite different from the seething curmudgeon he depicts himself as in his comics. I’ve read at least 30 interviews with Clowes and, like the interview we ran in bOING bOING #6, they reveal that he is both an empathetic guy and a cynical recluse, which is what makes him – and his work – so fascinating.”

Special thanks to Mark Frauenfelder for posting these on boingboing.net with us and sponsoring our book giveaway contest!
