Two-Week Countdown to the Release of "The Art of Daniel Clowes: Modern Cartoonist"!

Starting this Monday we will begin our two-week countdown to the release of The Art of Daniel Clowes: Modern Cartoonist. For each day leading up to its April 1st release date (think advent calendar) we'll be posting some items of interest and other oddities at danielclowes.com that were unearthed while working on this project. Our full access to the cartoonist’s archives provided an over-abundance of material (thank you Mr. Clowes!) so these daily posts will feature some of the never-before-seen gems that we couldn’t fit into the book’s 230 pages. They will also give you an idea of the volume’s diverse contents including: photos, sketchbook pages and strips, childhood drawings, process art, unpublished work, illustrations, and so much more. Check back daily!

Call for tattoos update:

Thanks to everyone who sent us pictures of their Clowes tattoos! We've wrapped up the book project and no longer need submissions for it.

However, we will continue to post your tattoos in our Eightball Ink Flickr gallery. So keep sending your photos and check back for updates.

In addition to the tattoos, we had so much so much outstanding material for our book that we couldn't include it all. The good news is we'll be posting a lot of interesting Clowes art and related material in the coming months in anticipation of the book’s April 2012 release.

From the Vault: Glenn Beck Illustration

This illustration was commissioned by the New York Times Magazine, but never published. They used a photograph instead.

CLOWES: I was asked by the NYT to draw Glenn Beck for the cover of the Sunday magazine - apparently, he wasn't going to sit down for a photo-shoot with the Times and so they had to hire an illustrator for their big profile. I had been longing to draw his blubbery face for some time and happily agreed. I turned in the illustration on a Monday and was told that Beck had in fact agreed to come in and sit for a photo over the weekend, so they couldn't use my illustration. Thanks for telling me. The B&W photo they used was perhaps a bit more complimentary to Mr. Beck, so I'd say he made a good call.
